Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Xin Shunkang at the Zambezi Bream Festival and Cultural Expo
2015/08/12

Hon. Bernard Esau, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources,

Hon. Dr. Albert Kawana, Minister of Justice,

Excellencies of diplomatic corps,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon!

I’m very glad to be invited to attend the Zambezi Bream Festival and Cultural Expo. On behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, I wish this event a great success and pay my tribute to the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Zambezi Region and the Municipality of Katima Mulilo for their hard work.

China-Namibia friendship was forged in the years of the glorious struggle for independence of the Namibian people. We fought side by side like sisters and brothers. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Namibia, and we have hosted many kinds of celebrations. In the past 25 years, China-Namibia political trust has been consistently consolidating and our cooperation in various fields deepening. Namibia has become an important partner of China in Africa. Our trade volume reached 863 million US dollars in 2014, 16.78% more than previous year. The investment from China has grown to 4.6 billion US dollars by the end of

2014, which is in the front rank of African countries. This year, the trade volume has been increasing and reached 286 million US dollars from January to May, 0.56% up over the same period of last year. Our people truly benefited from our deepening economic and trade cooperation.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Namibia is rich in fishery resources and has a long history of marine fishery. The Namibian government has highlighted fishery and aquaculture as a key area of Vision 2030. In China, fishery is also an important basic industry and has become an advantaged industry with high technology and leading concepts after 30 years of reform and opening up. Apparently, China and Namibia have complementary advantages in fishery, and enjoy huge cooperation potentials and broad prospects. Since the independence of Namibia, the two governments have been committed to promote mutual-beneficial cooperation in fishery, and have signed a number of cooperation agreements. The past two years has seen great progress in bilateral fishery cooperation. With the help of Chinese companies, Namibia possessed the first ocean-going fishing vessel in May 2014. In November of last year, Hon. Minister Esau and myself attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the Hardap Inland Aquaculture Centre Renovation Project, which is the largest in Namibia and sponsored 3.2 million US dollars (approximately 40 million Namibian dollars) by the Chinese Government. The center is expected to be completed in early 2016, which will be the largest freshwater fish breeding base, and also a milestone for food security and poverty eradication in Namibia.

The unique natural environment provides most favorable conditions for developing fishery in Zambezi Region. The new Namibian government pays more attention to fishery and aquaculture, which will contribute to the industrialization as well as stable and rapid economic development. I believe that, under the government’s leadership, the hard-working Zambezi people will score greater achievements in aquaculture. I also hope that fisheries cooperation between China and Namibia in Zambezi will bear fruits earlier and achieve mutual benefits.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today's world is of converged interests, associated rise and fall, and common safety and danger. We need to work together to build a new type of friendly cooperation with win-win situation as the core. At the end of this year, the 6th ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) will be held in South Africa. China is willing to take this opportunity to further strengthen coordination with Namibia, review our pragmatic cooperation projects and identify the problems, set up our working direction, promote our cooperation in politics, trade and security to a new level, so as to play a model and leading role in China-Africa cooperation.

Let’s look forward to the rich fruits of future cooperation between our two countries!

Wish the Zambezi Bream Festival and Cultural Expo a complete success!

Thank you!
