Chairman Wu Bangguo Meets with Namibian President Pohamba

On December 20, 2005, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba in the Great Hall of the People.

Wu said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties 15 years ago, bilateral relations have witnessed sound and rapid development with effective cooperation in various areas. The frequent high-level exchanges between both sides have strongly pushed for the development of bilateral relations. Bilateral cooperation in the areas of science & technology, culture, judicature and human resources development has also made new headway. Both sides have kept close communication and coordination in international affairs, which has effectively safeguarded the rights and interest of their respective countries and the great majority of developing nations.

Wu indicated that China attaches great importance to bilateral relations and deems Namibia a reliable friend and cooperative partner. China would like to make joint efforts with Namibia to build up mutual political trust and expand and deepen cooperation in various areas so that bilateral traditional friendship and friendly cooperation will maintain vigor and vitality forever.

Wu noted that the NPC of China and the Namibian Parliament have maintained sound exchanges and cooperation. The NPC of China would like to maintain all forms of exchanges and cooperation with the new Namibian Parliament to promote bilateral exchanges in legislative practice and national development and enhance cooperation in the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) and international affairs.

Pohamba was satisfied with the development of bilateral relations and the exchanges in economy, trade and other areas. Both peoples share a traditional friendship and are now committing to national development while having their respective advantages. Namibia hopes to strengthen bilateral economic and trade cooperation and welcomes entrepreneurs of both countries to increase contact and discuss the approaches for cooperation. The parliamentary exchanges and cooperation are of great significance to the development of bilateral relations and it is hoped that the two legislatures will exchange experience on domestic legislation and at the same time jointly contribute to the affairs of International Law.
