On August 5, 2009, during his visit to Uganda, the Chinese Government's Special Representative on African Affairs Liu Guijin called on the international community to continue to make active mediation efforts toward the resolution of the Darfur issue and urged western countries to pressurize the anti-government armed forces in the Darfur region and let them join the peace process as early as possible.

While accepting the interview by local and international media agencies in the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, Liu indicated that the Chinese government has made unremitting efforts for the peaceful settlement of the Darfur issue, established channels of communication between Sudan and western countries on the basis of firm mutual trust between the Chinese government and the Sudanese Government, and urged Sudan to accept the deployment of an AU/UN Hybrid Force in Darfur, an important step forward toward the resolution of the Darfur issue.

He also pointed out that China was also the first country outside Africa to send peacekeepers to the Darfur region. At present, a 315-member engineering unit, the second batch of peacekeepers sent by the Chinese government to Darfur, is working on the peacekeeping operations in Darfur.

Liu said that there is no viable military solution to the Darfur issue. Embargo and sanctions did not work well. The only viable way is the political solution. He called on western countries to pressurize the anti-government armed forces in the Darfur region and urged them to join the peace process of resolving the issue by political meas ares.

Uganda is the last leg of Liu's five-nation visit to Africa. Before his visit to Uganda, he visited Egypt, Morocco, Senegal and Nigeria.
